The HOT lane reality, plainly stated: the I-85 Express Lanes run approximately 15 miles from Chamblee-Tucker Road (just south of I-285) to Old Peachtree Road in Gwinnett County. The Peach Pass Extension adds another 10 miles north to Hamilton Mill Road. You'll need a registered Peach Pass transponder to use them as a single-occupant driver. None of this is magic. The calibration just does its work while you sit in the same traffic as everyone else.
Active Steering Assist. Per Mercedes-Benz USA, Active Steering Assist provides continuous moderate steering support to keep the vehicle centered in the lane when DISTRONIC is engaged, using lane markings and the vehicle ahead as reference points. On I-85's clearly-marked lanes, the system performs well. Where it hands back responsibility is at exits and lane-change decision points. It's Level 2 automation (SAE classification per Mercedes-Benz USA), which means the driver is always responsible. You still owe the road your attention. What you get back is relief from the physical fatigue of low-speed maneuvering.
"Hey Mercedes" and MBUX navigation. The 2026 MBUX system, including the Surround Navigation introduced on 2026 models, uses MB.OS architecture to combine real-time traffic data with 3D representations of surrounding traffic. When I-85 backs up, it proposes alternate routing through Satellite Boulevard or Sugarloaf Parkway without requiring you to tap the screen. Say "Hey Mercedes, find me a faster route" and it works. - Say "Hey Mercedes, navigate to [destination] avoiding I-85 if congested." The system will accept that conditional instruction and monitor as you drive.
- Know your local exit before you commit to the HOT lane. If you need Sugarloaf Parkway (Exit 108), your egress window from the HOT lane is fixed. Plan the lane change before the access point, not after.
- Relax DISTRONIC's grip on surface streets. The system is calibrated for highway speeds. On Boggs Road or Pleasant Hill Road, standard driving is more responsive. Switch over once you're moving at highway pace.
