They're early, they know where the space sits, and they drove something that swallows the logistics without drama. Heading south on I-85 from the Atlanta area, the run comes down to two variables that rarely change, where the space is and when you arrive. The right vehicle and the right arrival window matter far more than any road-trip accessory you can order online.

At 205 inches in length and just under 80 inches wide (without mirrors), the GLS carries a tradeoff worth naming, and it's a mild one. Standard surface lots handle it without drama. What it doesn't love is a crowded overflow row on soft shoulders, the kind St. Andrews uses once the main lot closes. Arrive late on a Saturday and you'll be nudging into that territory.

The Maneuvering and Gear-Fit Play
Space is where the GLS and the GLE genuinely separate, and both answers come out right depending on how many people you're seating, because a family of seven wants the GLS while a family of five gets more usable room from the GLE.
The 2026 GLS comes standard with three-row, seven-passenger seating. With the third row up, Mercedes-Benz lists 17.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind it, enough for a cooler and a stack of beach chairs and not much more. Drop the third row and that grows to 42.7 cubic feet, which is where family loading actually happens. Fold both rear rows flat and you reach 84.7 cubic feet. For a family that fills all seven seats, loading strategy matters, so pack what you'll grab first on top, use the underfloor bin for the retractable cargo cover, and stage the gear the night before.
The 2026 GLE takes a different approach. It's a five-passenger SUV by default, with an available third-row package for seven occupants that adds power-sliding second-row seats and USB-C ports back there. With only five seats in use, its cargo hold opens to 33.3 cubic feet behind the second row, nearly double what the GLS offers with all three rows occupied. The EPA rates the GLE 350 at 21 city and 28 highway, compared to the GLS 450 at 19 city and 24 highway. That difference shows up on the nine-hour round trip from Duluth.
